There’s nothing quite like a good ol’ fashioned Spring Clean. Decluttering your life, embracing a bit more of a minimalist approach.

As science says, when we are ‘clutter free’, we are free to turn our attention to things that really matter to us (with the added bonus of a clear floor and cupboard space!).

But it's hard! How does one determine what constitutes as clutter when you hold a memory of just about everything in your drawer?

The answer is, by asking yourself one simple question - in the words of tidying and organising aficionado Marie Kondo, “Does it spark joy?”

You can apply this question to any item that you own; if it’s bringing happiness to your life it’s a keeper, if it’s not cracking a smile then it might be time to go and be re-homed where it could bring someone else a little spark of joy.

Nostalgia may start to sneak in at this point too and this is where it’s important to think about how often and when the last time was that you actually used or wore said item.

Marie suggests tackling clutter by categories as opposed to rooms; so spend the day rifling through all your clothes, spend another afternoon going through kitchen utensils and trinkets then start investigating your shoe situation etc. We didn’t say it was going to be easy but it will definitely be worth it.

Besides minimising the amount of items you have, decluttering can also consist of some simple organisation tricks.

Invest in some drawer dividers, use old shoe boxes, baskets or containers and make sure everything is sorted and has a clear place.

Let’s get our Kondo - ‘can do’ on.
